Steps Texas Districts Can Take To Address The State’s Low 2024 STAAR Results
Results from the spring 2024 STAAR test have worried educators across Texas. With only 41% of math students and 53% of RLA students meeting grade level or above, what does that tell us about how these subjects are being taught? And, more urgently, what steps can educators take to improve these scores in the future?
At Sirius, we believe that success in STAAR tests is achievable through high-quality instruction and purposeful practice. Regular, thoughtfully designed learning experiences can improve student comprehension from a level of basic familiarity to true fluency. This fluency is essential, as it frees students to engage deeply with the critical thinking required by the STAAR exams. In contrast, repetitive “drill and kill” methods fail to capture the nuanced challenges of the STAAR tests and too often result in wasted time and resources. We know that effective teaching, not mere test prep, is the key to success when taking STAAR tests.
